Raglan Community Board Update December 2019

The new Raglan Community Board was officially sworn in on Wednesday, 13 November. We are very lucky to have a mix of people, half of whom were members from the previous triennium and new faces, who all add to the depth of skills, passion and energy of the Board.  The RCB members are; Gabrielle Parson (Board Chair), Bob MacLeod (Deputy Chair), Dennis Amoore, Chris Rayner, Lisa Thomson, Tony Oosten and Satnam Bains. Raglan foodwaste trial to be suspended

After public consultation on the future of Raglan’s kerbside foodwaste collection, Waikato District Council’s Strategy and Finance Committee has listened to the community and agreed to suspend the service.

Sixty percent of the 774 submissions received during the consultation period said they would not be willing to support a targeted rate of $79.29 for the service to continue. Keep Reading

Matariki to be celebrated with art, food, music and storytelling

Waikato District Council is supporting a variety of events across the district to mark Matariki, the Maaori New Year, which will be celebrated between 25 June and 3 July this year.

The largest of these is the seventh Matariki Festival hosted by Te Whare Toi o Ngaaruawaahia – Twin Rivers Community Art Centre with the support of more than $6,000 from the Creative Communities Scheme and from discretionary Council funding. Keep Reading

Pohutukawa tree trimming carried out by wrong Waikato District Council staff

The pohutakawa on the corner of Bow St and Norrie Ave caused concern recently with locals unsure of who had hacked at low-hanging branches leaving the debris at the base of the tree.

Many took to Facebook to express their disgust at the lack of care taken by the anonymous tree-cutter.

At first, it was thought the tree trimming was the work of a vandal and when the Raglan Chronicle made enquiries Waikato District Council was unaware of any maintenance scheduled for the tree. Keep Reading

Garden frustrations vented on Facebook

A furore has erupted over garden beds in Bow St with many taking to Facebook to vent their frustrations.

The comments on Raglan Notice Board questioned why ratepayer’s money was being wasted, the choice of new plants, the use of out-of-town contractors and lack of consultation.

Feelings were running high with one local woman putting herself in front of the diggers to stop the work.

Waikato District councillor Lisa Thomson expressed concern for the hardworking council staff at the library who copped a lot of flak for the work. Keep Reading

Te Uku locals question NZTA road safety upgrades effectiveness

Te Uku locals are questioning the benefits of New Zealand Transport Agency safety upgrades after another accident outside the Waitomo petrol pumps.

Witness to the accident’s aftermath Rata Miller says while nobody was hurt, it was only luck and timing that prevented serious injury which saw one of the vehicles end up outside Te Uku Roast Office.

“People are often hanging outside, and coming and going to their cars so it was lucky no-one was caught up in the accident.” Keep Reading

Waikato Regional Council staff test their skills in oil spill exercise at Raglan Wharf

Waikato Regional Council staff engaged in a five-hour marine oil spill at Raglan Wharf exercise last week.

Council’s regional hazards team leader Rick Liefting says the exercise is essential to bring new staff up to speed with how to respond, as well as refresh the skills of experienced oil spill response staff.

“While we hope never to need to do it in real life, from time-to-time we do have such spills on our region’s waters, so we need to ensure our training is up-to-date.” Keep Reading

Call for Further Submission on Stage 1 of Proposed District Plan

Waikato District Council has today called for ‘further submissions’ on nearly 1,000 submissions that it received following notification of the Proposed Waikato District Plan (Stage 1) in July last year.

Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion says, “This is an important milestone on our progress towards finalising a new District Plan that brings together the old Franklin and Waikato sections to provide a consistent approach to development and growth across the district.” Keep Reading
