Sunday Funday Bowls proves very popular

Our second round of Fun Day Sunday bowls proved very popular again on Sunday, September 23. Some players had a wee refresher from last week, while the newcomers had the basics explained and had a go.

After learning the basics of how to place the mat, hold a bowl and deliver it, we moved on to learn how to play a game. It didn’t take long for this group to grasp how it all comes together There was plenty of natural talent among these players, which was great to see. Keep it going.

This venture was so popular that we have decided to run another ‘Fun Day Sunday’ for Beginner Bowlers….so WATCH THIS SPACE for details.

From these two Fun Day Sundays, players have been encouraged to come along to our roll-up days on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12.45pm (small fee applies).

We extend a friendly ‘Welcome’ to those who have joined up as Bowling Club members and we wish you well in your bowling careers.

Many thanks to Alan Price, Gordon Mills and Tim Ryan for organising this event. Thanks also to Terry Green, our coach, and to all those club members who came to help out. We have a great fun club atmosphere here at bowls.

On Saturday, September 22 our bowling club members played the first of the eight Aggregate Events, the Moore Handicap Pairs. Depending on their ability and experience each member is given a ‘handicap rating’ for each season. Teams were drawn on the day and after four games of eleven ends, played as a tournament. The winners were Maureen Wahanga and Alan Price with four wins. Second were Jack Peel and Darryl Hawkins with three wins and 74 points. Blue Stephens and Pim Blair were third with two wins and 59 points. Also, with two wins but with 56 points, Les Schlager and John Carr were fourth place. Congratulations to you all.

The second Aggregate event, The Harbourview Cup, was played Saturday, September 29, playing Pairs. It had a very good attendance with a number of our new bowlers joining in. Winners were Maureen Wahanga and Queenie Tukiri, second were Les Schlager and Murray Eddy, and third place went to Bill Bond and Brenda Waters.  There were six teams with two wins each so the ‘points for’ quotient was used to ascertain those winners. Close! Congratulations to you all.

Happy Bowling, Eileen Stephens
