A surfer is safe thanks to the swift actions of a vigilant member of the public and the rapid response of the Raglan Volunteer Coastguard at Ngarunui Beach on the 8th of March 2026.
At approximately 8:05pm, Raglan Volunteer Coastguard were tasked to reports of a swimmer in difficulty near the Surf Lifesaving Club. Both rescue watercraft, Rylock Waikato 1 and 2, responded immediately, arriving on scene within ten minutes. With fading light and a moderate swell still running, both began a search South along the beach.
Shortly after commencing the search, the crew aboard Rylock Waikato 1 located a surfer in distress approximately 200 metres offshore and quickly brought them safely aboard. The individual was showing signs of hypothermia and was transported back to shore, where they were handed into the care of awaiting Hato Hone St John paramedics.
A huge thank you goes to the member of the public who raised the alarm – their quick thinking made all the difference. We also extend our thanks to Surf Lifesaving Raglan for their support and assistance on the beach during the rescue.
New Vessel Fundraising Updates:
We want to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to WEL Energy Trust and the Lion Foundation for their generous donations towards the procurement of our new Coastguard Rescue Vessel. With WEL Energy Trust contributing $20,000 and Lion Foundation $120,000 we are getting closer to reaching our goal of retiring Gallagher Rescue and committing to the build of the new vessel designed to keep generations ahead safe.
Without the support of Trusts and Community Donors, and Corporate Partners we simply cannot operate. If you wish to see us get to the end of this fundraising mission we welcome you to join our campaign. Get in touch with us: shorecrew@raglancoastguard.org.nz
