Our homes can be tough on our health

August 18, 2026

Cold, damp homes are common in Aotearoa, and Whāingaroa’s humidity doesn’t help. Condensation and mould thrive, and when mould thrives, people don’t. Mould in our homes contributes to health problems such as asthma and respiratory illness. These illnesses badly impact our tamariki and elders!

What can we do?

Moisture makes homes harder to heat and encourages mould.

Kick moisture out by:

• Airing out the house each morning for 15 minutes

• Drying washing outside

• Using extractor fans and opening windows when cooking or showering

• Using lids on pots

• Wiping condensation off windows

• Keeping furniture slightly away from walls

DIY and Maintenance:

• Check and clean your gutters and drains.

• Ensure there is no water pooling under the house

• Extraction fans are working and whanau use them

• Can you get a ground moisture barrier installed

Keep it warm! Insulation, lined curtains and an efficient heater like a heat pump, wood burner or flued gas heater help keep your home warm and reduce mould. To stay healthy and comfortable, the World Health Organisation recommends keeping living areas no less than 18°C and bedrooms at 16°C.
