A group of Raglan locals gathered on the Rangitahi half court on Friday 26 April to give pickleball a go – and discovered a shared love for the fast-growing sport.
Sixteen people turned up for the informal session, including two family groups and a mix of residents who had never met before. Participants ranged in age and ability, with 82-year-old Bev Hanifan teaming up with her 12-year-old granddaughter Amelia Hanifan for a fun multi-generational rally in the autumn sun.
“It was a lot of fun,” said one organiser. “None of us had met before, but everyone got stuck in. It was a great way to connect with others and get moving.”
The group plans to meet again and hopes to grow interest further. There’s also talk of approaching Rangitahi or the Council to explore options for a dedicated space to play – possibly even getting pickleball court lines marked alongside the existing basketball court.
To build momentum, a Pickleball Muster has been organised to find others keen to play and help establish a regular community fixture.
