Raglan archers Rory O’Brien and his 13-year-old son Kieran are preparing to represent New Zealand at the International Field Archery Association World Field Archery Championships in Yankton, USA in July.
The pair are members of Lakeview Archers, based near Cambridge, and earned their places following strong performances in national field archery competitions.
Rory has been selected for New Zealand’s Bowhunter Unlimited Style team, alongside fellow Lakeview archer Simon Young of Cambridge. Simon has also been named in the Champion of Nations team.
Kieran will be part of the wider New Zealand Black Arrows contingent travelling to the championships.“It is exciting to be a member of this large team,” Kieran said. “Normally archery is an individual sport, so it is really nice to be in a team environment for this event.”
Lakeview Archers president Christine Finnegan said it was especially exciting to see a father and son representing New Zealand together.
Their selections follow strong performances at the NZ Field Archery Association Marked Nationals in Kumeu, where almost 80 archers competed.
Lakeview Archers sent 15 members to the event, with 13 returning home with medals or certificates.
Kieran was also among five club members who won trophies in the Marked League series.
Lakeview Archers is based near Cambridge and caters for all ages and abilities.
