The Raglan Bowling Club held their summer opening day on Saturday September 5 with 33 players and a dozen supporters enjoying a sunny day with two games of triples and several novelty events.
Members were able to experience for the first time their newly upgraded facilities with a major project to upgrade the green surrounds completed on time for opening day.
The project led by greenkeeper John Lenihan entailed replacing all the back boards on both greens and replacing all the Astro and artificial grass on both green surrounds. This has enhanced the appearance and safety of the club’s facilities and will benefit members and the Raglan community for many years to come. The project was completed on budget with generous support from our parent club Raglan Club Inc and timber and cement products sponsored by Kiwi Timber supplies. Club members completed the majority of the work with voluntary labour, with TigerTurf coming in to complete the installation of the new Astro and artificial grass.
Opening day commenced with a welcome from President Alan Price, with the honour of raising the flag expertly performed by senior member Des Bishop. Popular member Heather Burton rolled the first jack bang online and John Lenihan expertly delivered the first bowl to officially launch the season.
Winners of the opening day triples tournament were John Robertson skip, Heather Burton lead and Marty Vink two
The day finished with a novelty corner to corner event won in emphatic fashion by Sharon Llewelyn.
The club is now straight into various club competitions commencing with the Moore Cup handicap pairs on Saturday September 12.
Other important dates on the calendar are our one off Spring Twilight bowls at 1pm on Sunday 20/9, this follows a successful winter twilight bowls in June. These events keep our enthusiastic twilight bowlers engaged, while everyone is encouraged to come and join in the day.
The club will be hosting a Bowls Intro Day on Saturday October 3 for anyone wanting to give bowls a go. The day will include tuition on the basics of the game and a chance to meet our welcoming members.
