Sixteen-year-old Hamilton Boys’ High School student Lenny Bailey wasn’t immediately won over by golf – even when his dad offered golf-cart rides and his favourite snacks to tempt him onto the course.
But by the age of 13 or 14, something clicked. Lenny talks to the Chronicle about finding his love for golf.
What do you love about the sport?
I enjoy the scenery, playing with my mates and whanau and every now and then hitting the perfect shot.
What do you like about the Raglan club and course?
I love the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the beautiful scenery of where it is located. I like how most of the green keepers, fairway mowers, and stone sculptors are volunteers.
Who supported and played with you at the beginning?
My Poppa started off when I was really young to try to teach me the basics of golf. Ever since, I’ve really enjoyed it; my dad took me to all my tournaments, supplied me with some of my golf clubs and played with me most weekends.
How did playing for enjoyment develop into playing in tournaments?
I started off only playing once or twice a month to wanting to play every day, especially in summer holidays. Once I got a bit better I gained confidence to want to play in tournaments. Also, by getting new clubs and actually having a set of clubs that I can feel comfortable playing tournaments with.
How have you progressed in the game and performed in competitions?
I have got better by practicing chipping, putting, and irons when I get the chance. At the moment my midgame isn’t that good but my driving is very good. Most of the tournaments I’ve played in have won four matches for Raglan to contribute to the tournament.
Describe your perfect weekend.
Saturday, play 18 holes and have my best round. Then Sunday I play 9 holes with my mates and get a hole in one in front of them. Then play 18 holes with my whanau.
Would you like to continue with golf long term and do you have goals for the future?
Yeah I think I would want to stick with golf long term. I would like to play in one of the biggest tournaments and maybe make some money off it.
What would you say to other teenagers who have never tried golf?
I would encourage them to give it a go and don’t give up after your first round; it’s addicting when you hit a good shot. It’s a fun sport where you can meet new people.
