Ocean advocate Phil McCabe to stand for Greens

September 29, 2026

Whāingaroa environmental advocate and former tourism operator Phil McCabe has been selected as the Green Party candidate for Taranaki-King Country.

Phil is best known locally for his long-running campaign against seabed mining, a cause he has advocated for nationally and internationally for more than a decade. He also previously co-owned and developed a sustainable tourism business in Whāingaroa.

“I’m proud to stand for the Greens because I believe our electorate is Green at heart,” Phil said.

“We all recognise our reliance on functioning ecosystems and we love our wild places. We all care for our communities and want a brighter future for all.”

Phil said the party’s commitment to a healthy environment, supporting vulnerable and marginalised communities, honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and addressing entrenched inequality closely aligned with his own values.

“I believe a thriving natural world is requisite for healthy and vibrant societies, which in turn facilitate buoyant and resilient economies,” he said.

“I have an ever-burning desire to contribute to a better future for all of us. Representing the constituents of Taranaki-King Country would be a huge honour.”

Phil describes himself as a father, grandfather, surfer, ocean advocate and sustainable business champion. His work has included building environmental movements and engaging with communities, political leaders and policymakers in complex and contested settings.

He is standing as an electorate candidate only and did not seek a place on the Green Party list.
