The 3 ‘Doggy Do’s – Sniff, Dig & Chew!

September 29, 2026

A happy, healthy dog is one that gets to do plenty of doggy things! Dogs need regular chances to sniff, chew and dig so they can express some of the natural, instinctive behaviours that help them stay calm, regulated and mentally & physically content, (or they’ll choose your couch or garden as their outlet!)

 1. Sniff!

Let them ‘sniff the news’! For dogs, the world is experienced through their nose. Sniffing provides mental stimulation, helps them gather information, and is surprisingly tiring. So, rather than rushing through walks, give them time to stop and sniff. Try scattering some of their food around the garden or hiding treats for them to find. A “sniffari” – a relaxed walk where your dog gets to choose where to investigate – is a fantastic enrichment activity.

 2. Chew!

Chewing is a natural behaviour that helps dogs relax, occupy themselves, and satisfy an instinctive need, and it’s great for dental health. Provide safe, appropriate chews and rotate them to keep things interesting. Puzzle- and food-stuffed toys, frozen carrots and veal brisket all encourage healthy chewing while making your dog work for their reward. Always choose chews suitable for your individual dog and supervise.

 3. Dig!

Digging for treats or toys or just for the joy of digging. An approved digging area like a corner of the garden, a sand pit, or even a digging box can provide a safe outlet. Build castles for them to knock down, or dig yourself and watch them join in!

Sniffing, chewing and digging aren’t “bad” behaviours to eliminate – they’re natural doggy behaviours to channel. Giving your dog regular opportunities to do all three can help prevent boredom, reduce frustration and support their overall wellbeing.

So this week, don’t just ask, “Has my dog had enough exercise?” Ask: Have they had a chance to sniff, chew and dig?
