Raglan Outdoor Bowls’ highly successful winter season concluded with their final winter tournament on August 10. The last three tournaments in June, July and August all enjoyed beautiful Raglan sunshine.
The June tournament sponsored by Jessica Gordon of Raglan Smiles was won by a visiting Taranaki team from Oakura. Skipped by Raglan expat Tim Ryan with Andy Scherer lead and Kerry McGovern two, they won on countback from Heather Dalbeth’s Raglan combination. Dalbeth was not to be outdone in July, being clear winners of the Karma Tiny Homes event with four dominant wins. She was expertly partnered by Murray Eddy lead and Jack Peel at two. The August tournament sponsored by Stephen and Michelle O’Byrne from Bayleys Raglan attracted another full field including two more Taranaki teams from Okato, 30 km south of New Plymouth. Played in perfect weather another local team triumphed, skipped by Eileen Stephens with Bev McDavitt Whyte at two, and John Robertson lead; they were the day’s only four winners. Robertson confirmed his amazing sporting talent by last weekend also becoming Raglan Golf Club junior match play champion.
Our local players all excelled in the recent Waikato champion of champion events with the highlight being Ashleigh Jeffcote winning the ladies singles and going on to be third in the national champion of champions.
On the Waikato club tournament circuit local Raglan team of Alan Price, John Lenihan and Trevor Kingi were winners of the Te Kauwhata July open triples.
The Bowling Club is currently carrying out a major upgrade of their green’s facilities with new Astro and artificial grass being installed on all the surrounds and backboards. This will provide enhanced playing conditions and be ready for summer opening day on Saturday September 5th.
Other important dates on the calendar are our Spring Twilight bowls at 1pm on Sunday 20/9; this follows a successful winter twilight bowls in June. These events keep our enthusiastic twilight bowlers engaged with the club.
The club will be hosting a Bowls Intro Day on Saturday October 3 for anyone wanting to give bowls a go. The day will include tuition on the basics of the game and a chance to meet our welcoming membership.
