Pre-schoolers going bush twice a week to ‘connect with nature’

Take a wander through Bush Park Wainui during the week and you could well come across a small group of pre-schoolers building huts and feeding eels in the stream, stringing their own “spiderwebs” between trees and frolicking with the fantails that flit just out of reach.

It is this secluded valley, which only locals seem to know about, that has become over the past year the extended outdoor play area for 10 of the oldest children from the childcare centre in Wallis Street – known now as Magnolia Tree Raglan but formerly Raglan Childcare & Education Centre.

Kids hunting competition good for possum control

Possum numbers in the Raglan region took a dive last weekend, thanks to the Kids’ Hunting and Fishing Competition.

Raglan’s younger generation helps Anzac tradition flourish

Raglan Area School head girl Lexi Holmes will share the story on Anzac Day next Tuesday of her grandfather’s uncle who died 100 years ago in a hospital in Lyon, France, after being wounded during World War One.

John John Grandeson, who was from Scotland, was an only son with seven sisters. Lexi says his loss brings the reality “that men died for us to live a better life” very close, despite the century that separates this 17 year old from a forebear who was not much older than herself at the time of his death.  Keep Reading

Kids’ fun ride buildup to big round-the-mountain race

The kids’ version of the annual, giant Karioi Classic bike race is fast approaching.

The non-competitive fun ride for kids aged 5 to 15 years came about a few years ago because so many youth were keen in taking part in the round-the-mountain cycle race that is held every year on the last Sunday of July. Keep Reading

Parents group seeks voice at Raglan Area School

A group of about 20 parents who want a voice in their children’s education held their first meeting at Raglan Area School last week.

Organiser Tara Wrigley says the group – parents of children of all ages at RAS – brainstormed ideas about what they wanted to achieve regarding communication with the school and having an input into their children’s education. Keep Reading

Raglan Junior Rugby Club

It’s hard to believe that the rugby season is just around the corner. The 2016 season was another great year for the club with nine teams and 135 registered players.
