Building Strong foundations for our Children

The Chronicle caught up with Ines Schickendantz who is offering services in Raglan.

Describe what you do.

I work in maternal and paternal mental health. I specialise in helping parents and those planning to be, to manage stress, anxiety, fears, navigate societal pressures and break inter generational cycles of dysfunction, while helping them to build strong, healthy parent-child relationships.

My mission is to empower individuals and families to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

What is your background in terms of training/ qualifications and experience ?

With my degree in Psychomotor Development, I possess a profound understanding of the continuous developmental process by which individuals acquire and refine skills related to physical movement, cognitive abilities, and emotional regulation. This knowledge equips me to assist people of all ages in fulfilling their developmental needs.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with diverse groups, including children, in prevention and therapy settings, adults in mental health hospitals, and the elderly in residential care. I’ve also worked closely with families from various socioeconomic backgrounds, visiting their homes to gain deeper insights into their unique circumstances.

What do you think are the main difficulties parents face in these current times?

In these current times, parents face a multitude of challenges, including work-family balance, stress, mental health concerns, limited social support, and parenting guilt. Finding suitable childcare and making schooling decisions further compounds these issues.

What are some of the ways you work with parents through their issues?

I create a safe and non-judgmental space for parents to express their thoughts and concerns, providing unwavering support throughout their journey. I assist parents by teaching mindfulness and relaxation techniques, collaboratively setting achievable goals, and crafting tailored action plans to address specific challenges.

My approach is highly individualized, aiming to equip parents with effective coping mechanisms, enhance well-being, and improve parent-child relationships. My goal is to foster an environment where parents can freely share, knowing they have a supportive ally by their side.

What are you offering in Raglan?

I’m excited to announce the “Building Strong Foundations for our Children” event on October 12th at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. This event raises awareness about the significance of parental well-being, inspiring parents to thrive, fostering a supportive community, and creating awareness of parents’ pivotal role in building harmonious family lives.
