Cold, damp homes are a reality for many families but they don’t have to be. Community Energy Whāingaroa’s free Home Energy Checks are helping local households create warmer, drier, healthier living spaces.
Free Home Energy Checks
Certified Home Performance Advisors Mike and Manu visit homes across the district, assessing insulation, heating, ventilation, moisture, lighting, and appliances. Each household receives a tailored report with practical recommendations, from simple lowcost fixes to larger upgrades, as well as a selection of energy saving resources ranging from water saving shower roses to curtains.
For those facing more serious housing issues, CEWh can also connect families with trusted organisations such as Habitat for Humanity.
The programme is available to Community Services Card holders and households referred by health providers, financial mentors, or community organisations
CEWh’s partnership with Meridian Energy extends this support even further, offering eligible Meridian and Powershop customers access to our home assessments and practical interventions.
We are proud to be receiving feedback like this:
“I was referred to Community Energy Whāingaroa through Meridian Energy and am so glad I took up the offer.
Manu, our Home Performance Advisor, came out to Ngaruawahia to do our Home Energy Check and gave us some really useful advice about making our home warmer and more energy efficient. We also received a report with recommendations that we have passed on to our landlord.
The blackout curtains and track system we received for the three rooms have made a huge difference to keeping our home warm and improving privacy. We also received insulation for our hot water cylinder.
We are very grateful for the support and would definitely recommend the Free Home Energy Check.”
Support for Landlords Too
CEWh supports landlords to meet Healthy Homes Standards and create warmer, healthier rentals for tenants. Their 1.5-hour Healthy Homes assessment covers heating, insulation, ventilation, drainage, moisture, and draught stopping. At $200 + GST, it’s a practical way to meet legal requirements while helping reduce long-term maintenance costs.
