Places for People – He Whenua He Tangata

Do you want to see more people friendly places downtown?

The Raglan Community Board with support from Raglan Naturally are excited to announce that we have been successful in securing funding under Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovating Streets Programme. The programme provides funding for our community to create new spaces to connect and interact.

This is an exciting opportunity to activate some of the community’s aspirations that have long existed – creating people focused spaces downtown.

Which  is  why we are launching Places for People – He Whenua He Tangata.

During the recent lockdown we saw how our community reconnected, slowed down and enjoyed the safety of being out on our streets; walking, biking, and letting the kids freely run and play.

This is something we should be able to enjoy all the time, not just in exceptional circumstances.

The people in our community make Raglan what it is, and this is our chance to create innovative and interesting spaces for people to linger and enjoy.

You’re invited to come along to the Raglan Town Hall Supper Room on the 1st & 2nd of August to share your ideas and feedback into what ‘Places for People’ means to you, and what you envisage these places could look like.

We will have further information about the Places for People project to share, including potential focus areas and information about the process and opportunities. As this is a community driven project and we want these spaces to reflect our collective aspirations for our town.

The first iteration of the project is scheduled to be in place for summer for our community to directly experience.

The project is experimental in nature, so we are aiming to utilise modular forms that will allow the layout of the street and town spaces to be adjusted.  Therefore,  while the project is in place, we will be asking for your feedback so if necessary the design can be modified and improved further, or the spaces simply reverted back to their current state.

More workshop details will be announced soon via the Raglan Community Board and Raglan Naturally Facebook pages.

See you at our first drop in session on the 1st and 2nd of August.
