Plastic Free July: Zero waste champion Indi’s ditching single-use

A New Year’s resolution to ditch the single-use takeaway cups is putting Indi’s on the track to being a zero waste café.

And owner Miles Ratima was prepared to take a loss in profits for what he sees is an environmental necessity.
“I started to see more cups in the gutters, falling out of rubbish bins and I realised I was the problem. I don’t want to give people the waste,” he says. Keep Reading

Look at us now; Show Off has become very social (thanks to all of you), cosy and relaxing and a wonderful space to work. We’ve become renowned and highly regarded for our pounamu and work with some of the best carvers in New Zealand. Keep Reading

Bubbly rather than a sombre mood as ‘wonderful’ gallery closes its doors

It’s not often there’s a festive air and corks are popped at the closing of a business, but then Matapihi Art Gallery – which shut its doors for the final time last Sunday – was no normal retail outlet.

While the dozen or so fabric and glass artists, painters, printers, jewellers, weavers and sculptors at the closing-down party lamented losing their collective space at the upper end of the CBD,  all were grateful for the opportunity they’d had to show and sell their work locally over the past decade. Former salon space transformed into stylish Pilates studio and health bar

You can get a drink at the bar of the latest business to open downtown – but it won’t be competing for custom with the Harbour View Hotel next door.

That’s because Lifted, which opened its doors last weekend in the old Mousey Brown hair salon premises in Bow St, is a reformer Pilates studio and health bar where you can enjoy a chia pod and smoothie rather than a bowl of fries and a beer.

For Raglan-raised Raph Henderson and partner Eden Pollock – both back home in New Zealand after seven years in Perth – the venture is something of a dream-turned-reality. Keep Reading

Pink’s the word as quirky gift shop bucks midwinter blues

Midwinter is not the best time of year for beachside businesses, but one Raglan retailer is right in the pink.

Not only has she more than doubled the size of her once cram-jammed gift shop Zinnia on the corner of Electric Avenue, but Marie Nicholls has re-used the shelving from the old video store into which she expanded last week – and painted it pink. Keep Reading

Businesses look to community-based patrol to address crime

The Raglan Surf Co is the third local business to come under the attack of a ram-raid/theft in the Raglan CBD this year. The local surf shop was hit last Tuesday 22 May at 3am. After reviewing CCTV footage, Police confirmed that the vehicle used in the ram-raid was one of four vehicles stolen from Huntly late Monday night (May 21).

The current string of burglaries started in February with FallenFront, who was hit three times in a row, followed by the Surf Emporium at the beginning of May.

Business owners and community members are pushing authorities for an immediate solution to the late night crime. Keep Reading

Raglan seen as soft target for burglaries

Raglan Surf Emporium was hit by burglars last Thursday in a smash-and-grab style robbery that has hit the town four times over the past three months.

Fallenfront, across the road from the Surf Emporium, was a target of three of the four robberies that police believe may be linked.

Owner John (JC) Clapham says Raglan is being seen as a soft target by offenders looking to quickly on-sell popular lines of street and surf clothing and other branded items. Keep Reading
