There has been a sudden announcement by the Club Executive to vote in favour of selling the Raglan Club to a major Supermarket brand.

Club president defends proposal to sell

The president of the Raglan Club challenges anyone to say that the town wouldn’t benefit from having a full service supermarket.

“How can anyone honestly say that a supermarket based on the producing model of Countdown is a bad thing for Raglan,” says Colin Sullivan, who has worked with Raglan SuperValue owner operator Sanjay Sharma for about 11 months on a proposal to buy the Club property to build a FreshChoice supermarket.

It will create more jobs, have better and cheaper products, better parking, and it’s not a “new supermarket”, it will replace an existing one, he says, defending his proposal to sell the Club property to Progressive Enterprises Ltd. Keep Reading

Club member urges community to oppose sale of premises

The fight to prevent the sale of the Raglan Club property has been taken to the community.

Andreas Broring, who has been a Club member for more than 30 years, has appealed to the Raglan Community Board to step in regarding a possible sale and presented his own plans for a proposed development at the site.

A special meeting is being held at the Bow St premises on Sunday, August 27, to discuss the fate of the cash-strapped Club, which made a loss of $117,000 in the last financial year. Keep Reading

Raglan Surf Co Goes Left

Earlier this week, the Hughes family closed the doors to the old Raglan Surf Co building for the very last time. They took with them 25 years of memories, that have since become the foundation of their new home, just two doors down.

For anyone who has been through town in the past few months, you might have noticed the old Vinnies building getting a bit of a facelift. With some fresh paint, new signs and some proper TLC, the Hughes family has brought new life into one of Raglan’s oldest buildings. Keep Reading

Police get tough in effort to curb youth crime

Raglan police will use their power to detain youth wandering the streets after 10pm in an attempt to curb a spike in juvenile crime – and, as a further crime prevention measure, police will endeavour to get the fingerprints and DNA of all youth offenders.

Constable Gary Ryburn said under the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989 police had the power to detain young people who were out at night unaccompanied by a parent or a suitable caregiver, and “we will be doing that”. Keep Reading
