Erosion is eating away at Raglan clifftop properties

Several large slips between Lorenzen Bay and the wharf have taken large chunks of private property into the harbour below.

The slips occurred during stormy weather in August, and along with large amounts of clay, one has brought down debris potentially used as retaining from the property above, including bricks, corrugated iron and plastic pipe, and another has a building located close to the edge.

Waikato District Council deputy general manager service delivery Roger MacCulloch says council are following the advice of Central Government of managed retreat regarding erosion, which means moving buildings away from the slips rather than attempting repairs to the eroding areas. Keep Reading

Stormwater upgrades muddying the waters in Raglan

Recent protests at the stormwater upgrades on Wainui Road are just another example of Waikato District Council’s dereliction of duty, Whaingaroa Harbour Care stalwart and Waikato Regional councillor Fred Lichtwark says.

WDC was served a non-compliance letter by Waikato Regional Council infrastructure team leader Hugh Keane pointing out the discharges authorised by the consent are unlawful, but no formal enforcement action would be taken.

“If it were you or me doing non-compliant work on our own property we would have to stop and have to pay to rectify it,” Fred says.

Waikato Regional Council Resource Use Manager, Brent Sinclair, says the consent that authorises the discharge of stormwater from Raglan township was granted in 2008 and is subject to more than 40 consent conditions. Keep Reading

Part of Wainui Road to be closed for storm water upgrades

A portion of Raglan’s Wainui Road will be closed from Monday 20 August so that Waikato District Council can upgrade the storm water system. The existing system is inadequate and causes ponding and runoff issues across a number of private properties.

The work includes new pipework under Wainui Road, and improved drainage and swales. It will improve the capacity of the storm water system, and will reduce the severity and frequency of the ponding and runoff experienced.    Keep Reading

Housing survey: Why do we all need to fill this in?

This morning there was another desperate plea on Raglan Noticeboard for a place to rent. The house this family are in is suddenly up for sale.

They are great tenants, run their own small online business and have employers in town who would be devastated to lose them. After living in Raglan for 20 years, if they can’t find anywhere to live they will have to move out of town or split the family up leaving the Dad living in his van to carry on working and commute to see each other. Parking a hot topic on the Raglan Community Board agenda

Parking at Joyce Petchell Memorial Park was the hot topic at June’s Raglan Community Board meeting.

Council looks at another water company option

Waikato District Council is talking with Watercare Services Ltd and Waikato-Tainui about potentially forming a company to improve water and wastewater services for the district.

The informal discussions began when it became clear that neither Hamilton City nor Waipa District councils supported forming a joint asset-owning CCO to manage water as independently recommended.  Waipa and Hamilton want a non-asset owning model. Keep Reading
