Training with All Blacks squad a long way from playing Nintendo

Angus Ta’avao may be on the verge of turning out for the All Blacks but it was more sedentary games he often played in his youth, an old Raglan mate revealed this week.

“I hung out with Angus a lot,” Simon Laxon told the Chronicle from Melbourne where he now hangs from ropes with commercial engineering company Absafe.

Besides kicking the ball around they played a lot of Nintendo 64 – the classic gaming console – and downed a lot of cake. “We were always taking his mum’s carrot cake, I remember, dabbling in bits of food,” he laughs. Keep Reading

International Speaker on GMOs and GE to give talk

The talk will take place in the Raglan Town Hall Supper Room on Wednesday 5 September at 7pm.

Dr Jonathon Latham is currently touring Aotearoa to help us understand the implications of Gene Editing Technology and has accepted an invitation to speak in Raglan. Dr Latham is a prominent international advocate for public interest science, holds a Master’s degree in crop genetics and a PhD in plant virology. The theme of his talk is Advanced Gene Editing in Agriculture, Food and Biosafety Regulation.

The team at Raglan Community House are deeply concerned about the rising cost of housing in Raglan and have set up a group to investigate the problem known as the Whaingaroa/Raglan Affordability (Housing) Project (WRAP).

Saving the rhinos: Journey to South Africa with Aeronavics

On Saturday, July 30, 2018, Linda Bulk, director of Raglan-based drone company Aeronavics, and Hadley Boks-Wilson, Flight Engineer, took off to South Africa. Some 18 months earlier they were approached by Sarah Jones from the Raglan charitable trust supporting rhino conservation, ‘Tusk and Horn Wildlife Trust’.

At that time, Sarah had just returned from a trip to South Africa that she had undertaken with Peter Eastwood from the Auckland based charitable trust ‘Tanglewood Foundation’. During this trip they had met with world renowned wildlife vet and rhino specialist Dr William Fowlds, famous for his work in rhino conservation and rehabilitation. In 2012 William and his team managed to save their very first rhino from certain death after having fallen victim to a vicious poaching attack. It made headlines worldwide and propelled him into instant fame, a position he never aspired to, but which he reluctantly accepted in his quest to raise support for the fight against the soaring rhino poaching crisis. Part of Wainui Road to be closed for storm water upgrades

A portion of Raglan’s Wainui Road will be closed from Monday 20 August so that Waikato District Council can upgrade the storm water system. The existing system is inadequate and causes ponding and runoff issues across a number of private properties.

The work includes new pipework under Wainui Road, and improved drainage and swales. It will improve the capacity of the storm water system, and will reduce the severity and frequency of the ponding and runoff experienced.    Keep Reading

Raglan CrossFit teen toughs it out for second place in the NZ NationalsClassic

Raglan teen Tawhiri Komene-Salvation powered his way into the New Zealand CrossFit competition circuit with a second placing at the recent New Zealand Nationals.The 15-year-old Raglan Area School student was virtually brought up on CrossFit; his parents Rob Salvation and Jula Komene run LightWeight Fitness in the rugby club’s old shearing shed.

The youngest competitor at the July nationals held at Avantidrome in Cambridge, Tawhiri’s second placing in the scaled male division put him up against men of all ages, some more than twice his age. A young man of few words, Tawhiri’s CrossFit achievement speaks volumes and he credits his parents for supporting him with his training.
